Fitness fads come and go.

Everyone is looking for the next easy way to keep fit, lose weight and get perfect abs. Of course there is no quick fix. It’s about changing your lifestyle, keeping fit and eating healthy. No big surprise, you have to work at it. So this got me thinking of all the fitness fads that have come and gone and how running hasn’t. It’s getting more and more popular especially with the amazing free weekly parkruns. I kinda feel sorry for all those fads that are destined for the car boot sale or to be forgotten in the attic. So here is a look back on those fitness fads, a mixture of bizarre and fun  – do you remember them or even have one? The Slendertone You wear this on your abs and it uses Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) toning technology to create strong, deep muscle contractions to tone your body. EMS works to mimic the body’s natural muscle movements So it basically gives you electric shocks and makes your muscles work without you having to put any effort in. You can get fab abs while you are cooking a meal, watching TV, ironing and even walking.slendertone Richard Simmons Workout videos/dvd’s. He is known for his eccentric, flamboyant, and energetic personality. Loves being over the top, whilst having fun and helping people lose weight. He has been around for years and is still popular with some. It’s hard not to like someone who does “Glitter squats!”just a little bit fitness fads   The Shake Weight is a dumbbell in which the weights on either end are attached to the handle by a spring.  Shaking the weight in various position targets certain muscles. That’s about all you do….shake it like a polaroid picture and you too can look like the bloke.  Watch the advert here

Shake Weight

I am shocked and saddened to say I have never heard of Prancercise. After reading about this “Fitness Revolution” I want to find the nearest field or park and prancercise. I feel a parkrun prancercise PB coming on! “It’s about Self-Expression. It’s about Non-violence. It’s about Conservation.” Nothing wrong with that! It is defined as “A springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse’s gait and ideally induced by elation.”  What else is there to add apart from please watch the fitness video , get your best clothes on and be prepared to work out hard.  Let’s prancercise Prancercise1

The Hawaii Chair

Let’s go from a real hard fitness workout to a sit down, do nothing and get a great body fitness fad. This has to be one of the silliest and most hilarious fitness fads out there. The seat rotates in a circular motion, causing the sitter to simulate the movements of a hula dancer. “Using the Hula Chair tones abdominal muscles for a more defined waist, and strengthens hip muscles for a shaplier behind…while enjoying a relaxing massage. The best of both worlds”

You can even read a book whilst wiggling around on the chair – and getting fit at the same time…Genius

Let’s get some energy back…Tae Bo with Billy Blanks.

Really this whole  paragraph should be in capital letters as Billy is enthusiastic and likes to shout to make him seem even more enthusiastic. I will admit to buying his DVD and doing it more than 3 times. Energetic, different and fun, but only did it a few times. A review in The Onion says “22% can be used to fend off vicious attackers in an alternate universe where aerobics can kill”.

The Thigh Master

Apparently it’s still the Best for Rock Hard Thighs.Squeeze your way to firmer thighs. Put it between your knees….and squeeze. But wait, there’s more. Now introducing the “thigh master vibrato”. Yes, still the same great workout but it vibrates so adds a little excitement to your workout…this is so wrong.

thigh master There are sooooo many fads and I am sure there will continue to be a market for these crazy ideas. But let’s just stick with running. It’s fun, it can be cheap and most importantly it works.
